Stephanie, I might give it a try. Although I don't think there's enough caffeine in the world to keep me awake, alert, and participating coherently from 1-9am! I couldn't even handle all-nighters as a student, I like my sleep too much!

@cath - I have avoided conferences in 2d Life because of the steep learning curve, too. But at ScienceOnline in NC, I befriended someone who'd attended ScienceOnlineLondon in 2d Life and she said it was great. Took her 10 minutes to set up her (minimal) avatar and while it wasn't the same as being there, obviously, she said it was quite enjoyable. Depending on what else is going on during ScienceOnlineLondon, I plan to make a session or two in 2d Life. Maybe see you there?!

Nice post - I've enjoyed conferences like the Faraday Discussion and Gordon Conferences for just the reasons you present.

These days I don't go to conferences very often, but the combination of live webcast / twitter would allow me to participate far more easily and widely. And this could easily be in addition to the 'live' experience.

Nice post. I don't think I'll ever be able to make it to NC in January (not in my current job, anyway). It's our busiest time of year with grant deadlines, plus I never have any vacation days or money to spare that early in the year!

I thought about signing up to follow the London conference in Second Life, but was put off by the allegedly very difficult SL learning curve and the fact that it was only being streamed live, which was 1am - 9am my time! I will try to schedule my next summer-time UK visit to coincide with the next one, although it is the most expensive time of year to fly.

I love Vancouver, but it's an awfully long way from almost everywhere. Eva Amsen invited me to a science unconference in Toronto, but even that's a 4-5 hour flight :(
